Africa is the second largest of the seven continents and is home to over a billion people living in approximately 60 territories. Bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Africa covers 6 percent of the Earth’s surface and accounts for about 15 percent of the world’s population. Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa are some of the more well-known African nations.
Asia is the largest and continent in the world and is home to more people than any other continent on the planet. Spanning from the Pacific Ocean in the east to where it meets Africa and Europe in the west and stretching into the Indian Ocean in the south, Asia accounts for about 4 billion people, which is about 60 percent of the world’s population. China, India and Russia make up the bulk of the economic, geographic and cultural makeup of Asia.
The Caribbean is a collection of islands (archipelago) in the Caribbean Sea between North America and South America. Major nations include Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Because of its tropical climate, the Caribbean is a popular vacation destination.
Central America consists of the southernmost isthmian portion that connects North America to South America. Central America is lush with wildlife and is home to about 7 percent of the nation’s biodiversity, in spite of occupying only about 0.1 percent of the Earth’s surface. Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Costa Rica are among the constituent nations of Central America.
Europe comprises the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia and is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. Europe is the second smallest continent yet the third most populous. The United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain and Germany are all in Europe.\
The Middle East lies between Asia, Africa and Europe and contains Iraq, Israel, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
North America is bounded by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. To the south is the Gulf of Mexico. Consisting of Mexico, Canada, the United States and the Central American countries, North America is the fourth most populous continent in the world.
Oceania refers to the region surrounding Australia in the Pacific Ocean. It stretches as far east as the Pitcairn Islands.
South America comprises much of the South and Western Hemispheres and is ranked fifth in population and fourth in geographic area. The largest nation is Brazil, followed by Argentina and Peru.
